Beginner Kiteboard Lesson

Your Lesson: what to expect

Introduction to the equipment and safety protocols. Your instructor will likely start with basic theory, teaching you about wind direction, kite control, and safety systems. You’ll begin with a smaller training kite on land, practicing how to control it and understand wind dynamics. Once comfortable, you’ll progress to a larger kite and learn how to generate power, steer, and perform basic maneuvers. Expect plenty of hands-on practice under close supervision to build confidence and control

Recommended Course Duration: 3 hours

What will I learn?

  • Equipment Familiarization: You’ll be introduced to the kiteboarding equipment, including the kite itself, control bar, harness, and safety systems. Understanding how each component works and how to use them safely is crucial.
  • Safety Protocols: Your instructor will emphasize safety measures, including how to launch and land the kite safely, how to release the kite in an emergency, and how to assess wind conditions for safe kiteboarding.
  • Kite Control: You’ll start with a smaller training kite to learn basic kite control skills such as flying the kite in different directions (upwind, downwind, sideways), generating power, and depowering the kite.
  • Body Dragging: Once comfortable with the kite, you’ll progress to practicing body dragging in the water. This involves using the kite to propel yourself through the water without a board, which helps you get a feel for controlling the kite while in the water.
  • Board Skills: Towards the end of your lesson, you’ll begin practicing getting on the board and riding. This includes techniques such as water starts, where you use the kite’s power to lift yourself onto the board and begin riding.
  • Basic Maneuvers: You’ll also learn basic maneuvers such as turning, stopping, and controlling your speed while riding on the board.
