Your Lesson: what to expect
A tow foil practice lesson begins with an introduction to the equipment and a safety briefing, covering signals and communication with the instructor. Students then learn to set up their gear properly before practicing basic techniques like balancing on the board and standing up from a kneeling or lying position. As the lesson progresses, the boat speed increases to achieve lift-off on the foil, with a focus on maintaining stability and controlling the board’s direction. More advanced skills, such as carving turns and riding waves, are introduced as students become more comfortable.
Recommended Course Duration: 1 hour
What will I learn?
- Board Control and Balance: Students learn how to maintain balance on the hydrofoil board, which is different from traditional surfboards or wakeboards due to its hydrofoil design. This involves understanding how slight shifts in weight and body position affect the board’s stability and performance.
- Tow Technique: Mastering the technique of being towed behind a boat or jet-ski is crucial. Students learn how to hold onto the tow rope, how to position themselves in the water for a smooth start, and how to communicate effectively with the instructor for optimal speed and control.
- Hydrofoil Dynamics: Understanding the hydrodynamics of the foil is essential. This includes learning how the foil lifts the board out of the water as speed increases and how to adjust your stance and movements to harness the foil’s lift for maneuvering.
- Riding and Maneuvering: As students progress, they practice riding the foil at different speeds and angles, learning how to turn, carve, and possibly perform aerial maneuvers. These skills require precise control of weight distribution and foil angle adjustments.
